training for career conversations

training for career conversations

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

Oscar Wilde

A recent CIPD report on managing employee careers highlighted that line managers are most likely to be delivering career coaching activities than are members of the HR department.

The report also revealed that the majority of line managers are not trained to support the career development of their team members. In fact, "only 5% of respondents report that 'all' their line managers are trained to support career development".

Training line managers to have the skills and abilities to support employees in developing their careers is considered to have a big impact on the overall effectiveness of career management within an organisation.

Ad astra has therefore developed a workshop for line managers and HR professionals to develop their skills in supporting employees in their careers.

The workshop is designed to quickly build confidence in using counselling skills for those for whom career counselling would be a minor part of the job.

The sessions primarily focus around real career conversations, so as well as learning about how to conduct career conversations for others, delegates have the opportunity to do some supported thinking about their own career.

Since the course is delivered by a career professional accredited through ICCI, attendance counts as evidence in building a portfolio for accreditation for delegates.

The structure is based on three key elements:

  • an established counselling model
  • provision of tools to promote deep thinking about careers and enable discussion
  • opportunities to practise using these tools
